MANILA, Philippines – The migrants’ rights group Migrante-Middle East will be lobbying for an increase in the budget allocations for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their dependents.
In a press statement, Migrante-Middle East regional coordinator John Leonard Monterona said the Aquino government should come up with a budget allocation that will allow the government to respond to OFWs' needs and concerns.
"The bottom line is that the Aquino government must come up with a sound and feasible budget allocation wherein OFW-concerned government agencies such as the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) should not cite 'no adequate funds' as an excuse," Monterona said.
The group said that the Aquino administration should correct the budget from the previous year, when the funds for OFWs were slashed.
Monterona also says that the government must create a contingency fund for OFWs and their dependents in case of unforeseen events, such as the emergency evacuation of OFWs from the Middle East and North Africa.
